Modern Gorilla Glass (Victus 2 / Armor) and Apple's Ceramic Shield are tougher than ever — but neither is scratch-proof, and Apple's official position is that Ceramic Shield can still pick up "micro-abrasions" from sand, keys, and even the loose change in the same pocket. Once a main display picks up a deep scratch, you cannot polish it out. A £10–£25 protector is cheap insurance against a £329 Apple Store iPhone screen repair (and up to £409 for the Pro Max). For most UK buyers, especially in the first 18 months when resale value matters, it's absolutely still worth it.

Face ID is unaffected — Apple's TrueDepth camera array sits above the display surface and reads through any modern protector. In-display fingerprint scanners (Galaxy S series, OnePlus, Pixel Pro) are more sensitive. Cheap unbranded glass that's too thick frequently blocks these sensors, and we've seen sub-£3 Amazon glass cause the Galaxy S25 Ultra sensor to fail about a third of the time. Tempered glass is rigid (typically 0.25–0.33mm), feels closest to your phone's original glass, and gives real impact protection. Film (PET or TPU) is thinner, flexible, fits curved or foldable screens, and costs less — but won't save your display from a sharp impact like a key edge or a corner-first drop on a Tube platform. For flat-screened phones and tablets — the vast majority of devices in the UK market — glass is the right answer.

Three rules. First, clean the screen with the included alcohol wipe and then a microfibre. Second, use the dust-removal sticker that ships with every quality protector — peel a piece off and dab away every speck before lowering the protector. Third, where possible, buy a protector with an alignment frame (Spigen EZ Fit, ESR with tray) — the frame eliminates alignment errors entirely. A pro trick: run a hot shower for two minutes and install the protector in the steamy bathroom afterwards. The humidity drops airborne dust onto surfaces, not onto your phone screen.

Replace it when it cracks, chips, or has scratches that affect your view or touch sensitivity. A cracked protector has done its job — it absorbed an impact meant for your screen. Most quality protectors last 12–18 months with normal daily use. The oleophobic coating (anti-fingerprint layer) wears off first, usually around month 8–12 — when fingerprints become impossible to fully wipe clean, that's a fair sign you're due for a replacement.

Yes — typically 25–30% effective brightness reduction, because the privacy filter narrows the viewing angle. Most users compensate by raising screen brightness. On modern OLED phones with peak brightness well over 2,000 nits, the loss is barely noticeable. Partially. Anti-blue-light protectors filter 30–50% of high-energy visible light below 450nm. Clinical evidence on whether this reduces eye strain or improves sleep is mixed — your phone's built-in Night Shift or Eye Comfort modes do most of the same work for free. They're useful if you spend many hours daily on a screen and notice eye fatigue, but they're not a miracle product. Our honest blue-light review goes deeper.

Sometimes. "Edge-to-edge" or "full coverage" glass occasionally clashes with case lips, lifting at the corners. Quality brands (Spigen, ESR, Belkin) deliberately make their protectors slightly smaller than the visible display so any case lip clears them — these are usually labelled "case-friendly." Cheap unbranded full-coverage glass is the worst culprit for case clashes. If you use a heavy-duty case (OtterBox Defender, Pelican Voyager), check the case manufacturer's compatible protector list first.

Curved Samsung displays defeat traditional flat glass — there's no geometric way to get edge-to-edge fit without lifting. Three options work. Samsung's own official protector is the safest (best in-display fingerprint reliability). Whitestone Dome Glass is the gold standard for true edge coverage thanks to its UV-cured liquid adhesive — but it's an unforgiving install. Tempered glass — almost never. The adhesive layer picks up dust and lint the second it leaves your screen, and you'll get permanent bubbles. PET/TPU films are slightly more forgiving but rarely worth the effort. If you took one off cleanly within a few minutes and rinsed the adhesive side under cold running water (only with film, never with glass), you might get away with reusing it once. Otherwise, replace.
